Finding Courage: Tookie's Journey from Self-Doubt to Stage
Ever felt like you're standing in your own way? Like there's something you're meant to do, but fear keeps holding you back? This soul-stirring conversation with Tookie from Haughton, Louisiana will have you questioning what dreams you might be postponing.
Tookie opens up about her lifelong connection to music and the paralyzing self-doubt that kept her from sharing her gift with the world until age 35. "Self-conscious, scared, nervous... missed opportunities because of it," she confesses, painting a picture that many of us know all too well. Her turning point came from a simple promise to herself: perform on stage just once. What followed was unexpected support that transformed her life.
What makes Tookie's perspective so refreshing is her emphasis on authenticity over perfection. She's not concerned about hitting every note perfectly – she wants listeners to feel something genuine. "I want you to hear my words... It's all about the soul of music," she explains with disarming honesty. In a world obsessed with flawless performances, Tookie's approach reminds us that real connection comes from vulnerability.
Her parting wisdom hits like a thunderbolt: "The worst thing you can do is prevent yourself from being something you were destined to be." If something keeps calling to you, perhaps it's time to answer. As Tookie powerfully demonstrates, sometimes the most important person to show up for is yourself. Listen to this episode, then ask yourself: What might be possible if you stopped getting in your own way?

The worst thing you can do is prevent yourself from being something you were destined to be.
Speaker 2:So if you feel it, go for it, welcome back. We do have miss tookie here from haughton haughton, louisiana. Y'all Welcome back. We do have Miss Tookie here from Halton Halton, Louisiana y'all, she's made it all the way down here to Shreveport to join us for Wine Down Wednesday. Tookie, how are you?
Speaker 1:I'm definitely okay, it's a spot. I love it here. I'll be back.
Speaker 2:Tell us a little bit of why you chose singing as your passion.
Speaker 1:Music has always been a part of me, like I have an instrumental through my day, like that's just how I resonate, how I regulate my emotions, and I'm finally getting the courage to show you guys that it's okay to express yourself and it's okay to be different. And it's okay to be different, it's okay to be nervous. Just do what you love and people will support. So that's why I'm here.
Speaker 2:I'm trying to tell you it's okay to just be you, to do what you want to do, like not getting in your way, and I think that's a lot of us. Once we step in our way, we just we limit ourselves I was in my way a long time, not anymore okay, okay. And so what did in your way?
Speaker 1:look like in my way was self-conscious, um, scared, nervous. Oh they won't like it, so I won't do it. Self-doubt, missed opportunities because of it, like you have to do what you love and everything else will fall into place. I'm a firm believer and a walking testimony of that. So, yeah, don't be scared, y'all Get out your way Right.
Speaker 2:So for a lot of us, because we are still in the way how did you overcome it Like? How did you now be who you are, where you are, out in the public, able to talk about? Hey, I was, this did happen, but now I'm here because this happened.
Speaker 1:I got tired of always looking and wanting to be there and doing that without actually trying to pursue it. So I'm telling my age. When I hit 35, I made a promise to myself that at least one time I'm going to hit somebody's stage and when I did, it was met with such open arms Like you never know who's looking, who's there, who's encouraging you. Somebody took me by the hand and said hey, you should do this. I was like I should and I got on my way and I just started moving ever since. So just ask for clarity. That's what I did and you find it. You'll see where you went to go.
Speaker 2:Tika, you better be open and honest with us.
Speaker 1:At this big age. I ain't got no choice. Baby Ain't-T-Honesty is all in my DNA, if you know me. That's it. I don't have time for the fake. I don't have time for the laughs. I've grown to be genuine, genuine, and I hope that I can convey that to the world. That's it.
Speaker 2:When you're out there performing, what is one thing that you want the audience to leave feeling from you?
Speaker 1:I want something in something that I said to resonate. I don't care if it was off-key.
Speaker 1:She missed that note. It was imperfect. She didn't go with the beat, because I'm not. But I want you to hear my words, because nothing that I say is negative, nothing that I'm not. But I want you to hear my words, because nothing that I say is negative, nothing that I say is bad. I want you to hear my words, I want you to let them sink in and resonate and I want you to feel me. It's all about the soul of music and that's where I'm coming from.
Speaker 2:So last question, Cause we know you gotta get on stage. So so last question. Last question, because we know you got to get on stage soon man. She got me in tears For those that want to pursue the passion of singing or just any career, but they are afraid. What would be just one message or two that you would leave for them.
Speaker 1:If it's constantly on your mind, it's there for a reason. If it's constantly on your mind, it's there for a reason. If something's telling you to pursue it, don't ignore it. You know, we know you're afraid. Stop being afraid. The worst thing you can do is prevent yourself from being something you were destined to be. So if you feel it, go for it. I mean, take a chance, chance. This is what I did, and hopefully y'all see my prices. This chance it's scary, it's hard, it is. I'm nervous, I'm sweating bullets, but I'm here and it's what matters you showed up for yourself, you did, you did.
Speaker 2:Yes, ma'am, for real, took it. Look y'all I've been trying to get a name and it's so fearful. You showed up for yourself, that's it. That's damn, for real. Took it. Look y'all I've been trying to get a name and it's so simple Took it, took, took, look, took it, took. That's it. It has been an honor having you on. Just this little moment. You've made a big impact.
Speaker 1:Don't make me cry, and we are just thankful for having you on and we can't wait to see your performance. It's cancer season. My birthday in three days. Don't make me cry. Oh my gosh. So many birthdays here.
Speaker 2:Birthdays. I'm a. Capricorn we're talking about it. We're cool. We're cool. Bow, wow, pow, pow, pow. Thank y'all for joining us. We'll see y'all on the next one.
